Transforming a high-investment external deliverable into a scalable, in-house creative capability

Overview

Led the design and evolution of FTI Consulting’s global Sustainability Report, transforming it from a costly, externally managed deliverable into a high-quality, in-house creative capability.

Context

The Sustainability Report is a high-profile, externally facing publication developed in partnership with Legal, Compliance, Investor Relations, and Sustainability teams. Prior to 2021, the report was managed by an additional team/internal agency, resulting in high costs and limited internal ownership of the creative process.

There was an opportunity to bring this work in-house to:

  • Reduce external spend

  • Increase creative control and flexibility

  • Strengthen alignment with brand standards

  • Build internal capability for future scalability

My Role

2021 – Lead Designer (Individual Contributor)

  • Took full ownership of the report design, delivering the project end-to-end independently

  • Partnered directly with cross-functional stakeholders to translate complex content into a clear, engaging narrative

  • Successfully replaced agency support, significantly reducing costs while maintaining quality

2022–2024 – Creative Director

  • Transitioned into a creative direction role, overseeing the report’s evolution year over year

  • Led and mentored internal creative team responsible for execution

  • Ensured consistency, quality, and alignment with broader brand strategy

Approach

  1. Bring the Work In-House Established a new model for delivering the report internally, creating a more agile and cost-effective approach.

  2. Align Complex Stakeholders Worked closely with Legal, Compliance, IR, and Sustainability teams to balance regulatory requirements with clear, compelling storytelling.

  3. Build for Scale Developed a repeatable structure and design system to streamline future iterations and enable team-based delivery.

Execution

  • Full report design (layout, typography, data visualization, visual storytelling)

  • Development of templates and structured frameworks for recurring content

  • Collaboration across multiple stakeholder groups to refine messaging and ensure compliance

  • Ongoing creative direction and quality control across subsequent editions

Impact

  • Reduced agency costs by bringing the report fully in-house

  • Increased efficiency and control, enabling faster iteration and closer alignment with stakeholders

  • Elevated creative quality and strengthened alignment with global brand standards

  • Scaled delivery model, transitioning from individual execution to a team-led approach under creative direction

  • Established a repeatable framework for future reporting cycles
