Building a distinctive brand identity through packaging, storytelling, and scalable creative direction


Overview

Led the design and evolution of packaging and brand collateral for Hopothesis Beer Company, helping define a distinctive “geeky fun” identity and bring multiple products to market.



Context

Following the initial product launch, Hopothesis brought design in-house and sought to evolve its visual identity. The opportunity was to create a more distinctive and cohesive brand that would stand out on shelf and resonate with customers.

The brand direction shifted from a chalkboard aesthetic to a more ownable concept blending scientific references with playful storytelling.



My Role

Early Collaboration (Design Team)

  • Contributed to the evolution of the brand’s visual direction

  • Supported concept development and execution for early products


Lead Designer (Freelance)

  • Became the sole designer, owning packaging and collateral moving forward

  • Partnered directly with the founder to develop concepts and bring new products to market

  • Led design from initial concept through final production



Approach

  1. Define a Distinctive Brand Identity Helped establish and evolve the “geeky fun” positioning, creating a unique visual and tonal space within a crowded market.


  2. Design for Shelf Impact Developed bold, recognizable packaging that would stand out visually while reinforcing brand personality.


  3. Scale Across Products Created a consistent design system adaptable across multiple beer varieties while allowing each product to have its own identity.


  4. Integrate Brand Across Touchpoints Extended the visual identity into sell sheets and supporting materials to ensure a cohesive brand experience.



Execution

Packaging & Labels

  • Designed packaging for multiple beers, including Fallin’ Oats, Flying Buttress, and Odranoel

  • Developed concepts, sourced and created artwork, and finalized production-ready files


Brand Evolution

  • Contributed to the shift from chalkboard-inspired visuals to a scientific-inspired system

  • Reinforced the “geeky fun” concept across all products


Collaborative Projects

  • Supported design development for the IPA and Drafty Window as part of a broader creative team


Collateral

  • Designed sell sheets for retail and tasting audiences

  • Created materials that balanced product information with strong brand storytelling
